(4images) Gallery template - Please, help!

I often see at sites that offer designs, it says "Gallery Template" So I guessed this is the layout of the gallery?

I wonder if changing the layout of a gallery is complicated? Does it take a lot of time/effort?

I'm gonna try using 4images and I've NEVER userd a gallery script before, so I'm really scared I'll do something wrong and maybe accidently screw something up.

I'm not sure which files to edit. What I want to do, is basicly, changing the layout & appearance.

That includes the top banner/header image of the page, the colour of the text and links ... I was thinking, also, maybe to have a sidebar qwith a welcome message, or a little box, just below the top banner, with the welcome message in it, maybe something like this (http://www.fan-sites.org/dominic/library/) [yes I know this is not a gallery, but do you see the bow where she has a welcome message, it says "Welcome to the article and interview library of Dom Online. If you find a....." etc.) And then, after that welcome message, the content begins.

Is this possible to make in 4images? Is it complicated? If not, I'd just want to change the top banner and the text colour and such things. Which files shuold I edit?
